How to Give Zakat: Who Is Eligible, How It’s Calculated, and Why It’s a Right

How to Give Zakat? Who Can Receive It and How Is It Calculated? Zakat Is Not Charity — It Is the Delivery of Justice Zakat is not simply a religious duty. It is a system of social balance—a financial structure that protects vulnerable members of society, stimulates fair economic circulation, and prevents wealth from being locked in the hands of a few.

Zakat is not an act of generosity; it is the fulfillment of a right.

At In Your Hand, our fieldwork consistently shows that Zakat is far more than a number calculated once a year. It is a social responsibility that restores dignity, empowers families, and repairs economic imbalance.

1) Who Can Receive Zakat? Allah Decides — Not Us Zakat distribution is not based on personal sympathy or preference. The Qur’an clearly defines eligible recipients:

“Zakat expenditures are only for the poor, the needy, those employed to collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, for freeing slaves, for those in debt, for the cause of Allah, and for the stranded traveler.” (Qur’an 9:60)

Field Reality (Observed by In Your Hand):

The Poor: No or extremely low income

The Needy: Income exists but basic needs unmet

The Indebted: Crushed by unmanageable debt

Travelers: Refugees, displaced families

In the Cause of Allah: Education, community service

Zakat Workers: Ethical system operators

Freedom from Exploitation: Modern equivalent of liberation

🚫 Zakat cannot be given to parents, children, spouse, or wealthy individuals.

2) Why Do We Give Zakat? It Is Not Kindness — It Is a Right “In their wealth is a known right for the needy and deprived.” (Qur’an 51:19)

Zakat is:

Not generosity

Not a favor

Not optional

It is mandatory redistribution of rights. That is why Zakat preserves dignity and does not create dependency.

3) How Is Zakat Calculated? It Is Not Only 2.5% Zakat applies only when:

Wealth exceeds basic needs

It is held for one lunar year

It surpasses Nisab

Formula: (Total wealth – eligible debts) × 0.025

4) Which Assets Are Eligible for Zakat? ✔️ Cash, savings, gold, silver, business inventory ⚠️ Stocks & crypto (if held for profit/savings) ❌ Personal-use items (home, car, clothing, tools)

5) Cash or Goods? Field Reality Matters While Zakat is ideally monetary, in many crisis zones:

Inflation destroys cash value

Food access collapses

In such cases, food-based Zakat feeds where money cannot.

6) Giving Zakat with Dignity Zakat must be given:

Quietly

Respectfully

With intention

Zakat is a right—and rights must be delivered with dignity.

Zakat Is Not Financial Math — It Is Social Equity Zakat:

Reduces poverty sustainably

Supports education and livelihoods

Protects dignity

Restores balance

At In Your Hand, we witness Zakat reviving communities and rebuilding justice every day.
